How did the first version of MaNGOS managed to connect with the client?

No as far as I can remember Mangos revision 1 was for 1.11 or 1.12.

However what I posted is still valid. Originally another team disassembled the leaked alpha and later it was updated as new patches came.

Mangos developers do the same now. Every new patch they look up the differences and implement them.

As for having the source code, no, to my knowledge no one has ever gotten hold of that.

Actually the first version of mangos supported connections 4544 client and was originaly forked from WoW Daemon in 2005.

Back then TheLuda was one of the main devs. And offcourse many many others came along since then. And others retired.
