The Worst Error. None at ALL! "game server" -Linux-

Hello, I am trying to put together a mangos zero server on linux. I cannot seem to connect to the usual forums for this(mangos zero). Gives me a page does not exist. So i will post my issues here in hopes someone one will be so gracious to shine down their beautiful knowledge on this issue. (;

I used the files from the mangos zero git followed some rules, learned some SQL and everything worked out great! I checked to make sure spells were loading and scripts etc.. It completed successfully and I am able to make commands as if the sever is running (add accounts announce blah blah)

However, when I launch the game client I get get stuck on 'connecting to game server.'

I know that this is a issue with:

I CAN connect to the realm database but I CANNOT connect to the mangos database.

I am confused because when I look at what mangosd loaded, to me it looks like a lot of stuff! scripts, monsters, the whole shabang!

Here are some of my ideas on where I might have gone wrong:

I didn't see anything when executing the mangosd about maps except for stating where Vmaps are at(at the very begining). Should I see some loading bar or some sort of information on that?

At the moment I am connecting everything on this computer i.e. 127.0.0.1 so it cannot be a ip issue. The ports are all the same aswell.

i have searched many places to solve the millions of errors I have had and it was fun. However, now I don't even know what to search for because I am not getting an error whatso ever.

If you would like some more detail of anything that might help please ask!!

Some other obvious questions...

You did copy and run ad.exe in your WoW installation to generate the proper maps, buildings, and dbc directories, then moved them to the root folder of your MaNGOS-Zero server?

Also, did you copy and run the binaries for creating vmaps and then move the generated directory for that into your server root?

The vmaps are optional, but the other three data directories are critical for mangosd to function. Since realmd is a separate proccess, you would still be able to create accounts, but mangosd can crash without error because it aborts on start without the proper data in those directories, which may not allow the daemon to write an error to the log file.

I made sure of the things you suggested However it did not change anything.

I know there is a website that allows one to upload data files/systemlogs/memory dumps/..etc but after a while of searching I gave up. So here is my start up for the server . There area few errors but they seem little to nothing. It fully completes and says the maps have been loaded and all.

Have you checked CPU usage? I find that on my server (a real, dual-cpu server) the mangosd process sometimes starts, but sits there eating 100% of one of my CPUs. No clue why. Sometimes if I let it sit for a few minutes it settles down and works. Other times I have to kill the process and simply try restarting it again.

Seems odd that it would idle using that much CPU with nobody in the world playing. Is there an iptables firewall on your Linux box?

Wait, did you edit the IP address of the realm in your realm database to the IP of the Linux box? If the realm server tells your client computer to connect to "127.0.0.1" then your computer is trying to connect to itself, not the server! Check that.

I'm running lubuntu and running WoW with wine. I don't believe I should have a issue with my firewall. They both the realmd and mangosd are set to 127.0.0.1

I'm pretty sure both of of these should be set to 127.0.0.1 for a localhost play.

Maybe I'm not quite understanding your statement. Explain please! :D

Are you trying to play on the machine your server is running on? If so, then 127.0.0.1 is fine. If your server is on one machine and you are playing on another machine, you need to use the IP address of the machine hosting the server. As far as WINE goes, I know there is some extra crap to do to make networking work. WINE is far too immature for my gaming needs right now due to things like that, which is why I game on Windows and do everything else in Debian. I would try to verify that WINE is working properly as far as networking goes before you suspect your server as the culprit.

I have tested running WoW with wine when I connected to a private 1.12 server a little while ago. I was personally surprised on the compatibility of wine with a lot software of today. If it's a popular piece of software (Not brand spanking new) it usually works without a hitch with a update. Oh, did you get yours running well? I saw some of your other posts about making a MaNGOS Zero server as well.

Yes mine works, but I am now trying to add mmaps support and thanks to git, it has had me down for quite a while, but I digress.

WINE can work, but with almost every commercial title I own, it is a pain to make work. Even older titles sometimes don't cooperate. It's not a good setup that is my issue, it is WINE not liking a majority of titles without mods here and there. I can't remember which one I tried last, but I had to install a package like "mdns" or something to get networking up. This was my thought when you told me you were running the client from within WINE. Still, if you can simply edit your realmlist.wtf file and connect to another server, my thoughts go back to one of two things. One, a firewall, and two, a problem with WINE connecting to localhost.

Also, did you use winetricks to install the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 runtime? I know that is required after version 3.3.0 of the client, but not sure about earlier versions. Have you run 'ipconfig' in the WINE command shell? Perhaps WINE is configured with an address on a different subnet or something, which could explain being able to connect to external servers but not one on your own network.

*UPDATE*

If you are using Ubuntu, I believe there is a firewall enabled by default. You can check by doing "iptables -S" as root. If a firewall exists, a bunch of rules will show up. If not, it will have three default chains, all set to "ACCEPT". If you do have a firewall and want to remove the rules, issue "iptables -F" as root. Note that once you reboot, you will have your firewall back, so you may want to add rules to accept connections from localhost on the WoW ports.

Ok, I followed your instructions however it was of no luck. Still the same issue I'm having. I CAN connect to my localhost server but only the realmd. After I connect I'm stuck at "handshaking" and if I click cancel it takes me to the available servers which it lists my server "Argent Dawn" online (if mangosd if running if mangosd is not running than it lists it as offline). After this I am stuck at "connecting to game server." I just can't connect to the actual "game server" which is the mangosd.

I hope this explains my situation a bit more. Thank you for all of your help so far. Those ideas are definitely ones that would have never occurred to me and is very helpful! Thank you! :D

More obvious questions...

You do have all required configuration files copied to your server's root folder? Those would be mangosd.conf, reamld.conf, and scriptdev2.conf.

Have you used the loopback address where required in all the configuration files? Is the loopback address also set in the [em]realmlist[/em] table of the realmd database?

Actually on zero, the config files go into "server-root/etc". I am fairly confident that his issue lies within the built-in iptables firewall that ships with Ubuntu. I use Debian, which comes with iptables, but nothing configured by default, so it is wide-open. I then use FWBuilder to setup my firewalls. I even have one on my zero server box, which only allows incoming connections on eth0 on ports 3724, 8085, and of course, SSH since this is a server and has no input devices or monitor! I imagine once he flushes his chains clean and sets the default policies to accept, he will be fine. The problem is, he has to do it at each reboot, and it leaves him without a firewall.

Oh, and I think his configuration is fine. His pasted boot-sequence from above shows everything is in pretty good shape. Besides, he can add accounts from the server terminal, so it is running. He just can't connect.

Should they be in the root folder? When I changed them from the /etc/ folder I got an error.

You should have had:

-P INPUT ACCEPT

-P OUTPUT ACCEPT

-P FORWARD ACCEPT

All of that junk you see is a firewall. You have to clear your rules out or you will never be able to connect. That or you must add a rule for WoW. The command iptables -F should clear everything out and reset iptables unless Ubuntu has changed something. You must run that command as root!

*EDIT*

Get to a shell as root. Run iptables -F and note that it is a capital F. Then run iptables -S noting the capital S. You should only see the three basic rules. If not, let me know.

*UPDATE*

Try the following commands in order and see if it will clear out your rules without screwing up. This is why I hate Ubuntu...

$ sudo iptables -X

$ sudo iptables -t nat -F

$ sudo iptables -t nat -X

$ sudo iptables -t mangle -F

$ sudo iptables -t mangle -X

$ sudo iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT

$ sudo iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT

$ sudo iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
