What do I need to keep in mind if I want to submit commits?

Hey guys,

I saw that some one of fixes and reports aren't being added as a commit to the repository so I want to do it by myself. I'm not that much familiar with the complete github stuff. While I browsed through the commits' history I saw that there are revision numbers and other stuff. Can someone explain me how I can submit a commit correct? For example I don't want to forget to increase the necessary revision numbers. Is there a way to do that automatic?
