Something wrong with Characters DB

If you log on your character then go back out the menu it'll just say retrieving character list and in order to see your characters you have to relogg.

EDIT: actually not even a relogg seems to work

This is a known issue on some other emus out there.. MVB, Ascent based emus, TC (unless they fixed it, its been a few years since i actually used TC) and MaNGOS above Zero... as Zero i have not seen it happen yet.

Additionally if you try and do a realm selection it should say session timeout.. if it does not we may be looking at a different issue here.

I've been using mangos for a long time and seen this once before, an update was released and I havent seen it since.

I had this issue on Zero, One, and Two years ago. I mean before I ever even became a forum member. I am thinking 2007 or 2008. I left MaNGOS alone and updated a week or two later and it was fixed. Have not seen it since and I cannot reproduce it. I will attempt to create a One server later this week and see if I can reproduce the issue. It is not happening on my Two server or Zero server.

Things to check: IP address in the realm DB, route to said address if it isn't on your local system, firewall (yes, it can block you even on the same system), and settings in your configuration files.
Can you give us some information about your setup ?

I run the latest dB and so does the cove servers, not seen it on either
I compiled this like 3 days ago, everything fresh from git

I'll try a recompile and fresh db tomorrow and see if it fixes.

I do remember having this issue early this year. The problem was a firewall. My DNS server (yes, I run servers in my home for those who do not know me) was down for an upgrade from Debian 6 to Debian 7 so I was using my ISP DNS servers. Due to this, when I attempted to access my Zero server, my external hostname resolved to my router IP address. Normally it would resolve to my internal address. What this means is that my client went out of my router, to my ISP, back to my router, and died because I did not have port 8085 allowed through my router and forwarded to the server. I basically sat at the character screen for ages.

Again, if you run your server on your game system (the same system you play on), try disabling any firewalls you may have and try again. If you have a separate system hosting your server, how about telling us the specs of your server, such as OS, network IP and subnet, and any firewall software you're running. It would also help to show us how your realm database is configured.

When you're running it on a windows root (for example) you should go into firewall with advanced security (that's how this is called), incoming rule(s), add a new, use port, type in port, next, next, next until name and description shows up. enter name for rule and maybe a description, hit done. Try again to log-in. You can edit this rule as often as you want but for testing...open it for everything. :3

You should also try to use other ports if 8085 (default) isn't working. Be sure to set this in config and database!

Please be also sure that you've set in realmlist table under address your external ip not 127.0.0.1 if this is a root-server/open server for friends we're talking about. ;)
If you're want to use (for example) login.yourserver.com or whatever you want to use as realmlist, you can set (if you're using a good domain host) a A-Record for forwarding to ip. So people can use login.yourserver.com instead of your external ip. I don't know if MaNGOS supports IP v6 but IP v4 should work well! (For IP v6 forward over AAAA-Record)

thanks for your answer, appreciate it!

I host from the same pc I play on. All the ports required for mangos are forwarded in my router so shouldn't be that.

I actually opened my ports yestarday so this problem was first encountered while using hamachi but have not been fixed by changing to dns.

I have no time right now but as I said - I will try a fresh db install tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem.

Your router does not even come into the picture if you're playing on the PC your server is on. Try disabling the Windows Firewall and trying again. If this fixes it, I would actually recommend you turn it back on, go to "Allow a program or feature through firewall", click "Add Program...", select magosd.exe, and do the same for realmd.exe! That should fix it permanently and leave you safe.
