Question

I'm unable to start realmd.

root@xxxxxx:~# systemctl start realmd
root@xxxxxx:~# systemctl status realmd
● realmd.service - Realmd service
   Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/realmd.service; disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2017-04-14 15:47:23 CEST; 11s ago
  Process: 22939 ExecStart=/home/root/zero/bin/realmd -c /home/root/zero/etc/realmd.conf (code=exited, status=217/USER)
 Main PID: 22939 (code=exited, status=217/USER)

I have entered the correct database logins in the CONF files;

Changed the Address on realmlist table to the server's IP instead of localhost.

Did you setup the process with root as run user ?

What happens if you start the realmd process manually ?

Tal'

To go root I do su.

Manually? As in just entering the path to realmd and realmd in shell? It gives me this:

Could not find configuration file ../etc/realmd.conf.

I need more info on this, to me that should work. What is your run user ? What are the permissions set on the files / folders ? What is the command you used to run manually the realmd process and using which user ?

Tal'

Now it gives a slight change somehow.

Apr 14 17:46:08 principium-eu1 systemd[1]: realmd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=217/USER
Apr 14 17:46:08 principium-eu1 systemd[1]: Unit realmd.service entered failed state.

Apr 14 17:46:08 xxx systemd[1]: realmd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=217/USER
Apr 14 17:46:08 xxx systemd[1]: Unit realmd.service entered failed state.

I login through a normal user and then I su to go root. I set chmod 777 on bin and etc.

The command I used to run realmd first was the one provided in debian install instructions, then I used the one you gave me, through the normal user on su.

It's been a long time since I've used linux, I'm not even able to login as root through bitvise or putty.

It looks like permission issues, everything is in place and should run.

Try to execute:

/home/root/zero/bin/realmd -c /home/root/zero/etc/realmd.conf

Tal'

Gives me:

21014 [realm-daemon]
<Ctrl-C> to stop.

Using configuration file /home/root/zero/etc/realmd.conf.
Login Database total connections: 2
MySQL client library: 5.5.54
MySQL server ver: 5.5.54-0+deb8u1
MySQL client library: 5.5.54
MySQL server ver: 5.5.54-0+deb8u1
Added realm id 1, name 'xxx'

But then

systemctl status realmd

  insists on the same output

Apr 14 17:46:08 xxx systemd[1]: realmd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=217/USER
Apr 14 17:46:08 xxx systemd[1]: Unit realmd.service entered failed state.

How do I exit the screen of realmd without stopping it?

After I do the same code for mangosd, it loads, so I guess it's working?

My problem now is figuring out where the dbc and maps folders should be at

Yeah, it makes sense that the service is not running if you start it manually ;-)

To exit, check foreground and background operation on shell on Google.

Now, can you please post here the content of the /etc/systemd/realmd service file you should have created ?

Regarding the dbc and maps, they should be in the same directory than the mangosd executable (by default).
