We had a look at a lot of different forum packages before deciding on smf

if you are very into php then maybe phpbb is better for you.

For the features we were after, smf was the best and clear winner for us

no, it is not related to mangos, it is basically simply off topic.

anyway, i could say phpbb with some plugins could be more powerful than smf.

basically i like their control system, smf is little ugly.

also mybb could be good alternative... but their board installation oftenly was unstable when i was trying to use it (few years ago).

I'm using MyBB since years and I know some big boards which are running with MyBB. I like it and it's quite good!
