some noob questions about maNGOS and WoW private servers in general

hello, I have a few questions regarding setting up my own WoW private server for me & my brothers to use, they are:

1. how much of the original content is usable in maNGOS (3.3.5a mainly, previous versions are optional)

2. is it at all possible to use the discs from the starter set to get the base version and then download the updates needed from there to avoid massive downloads by extracting the files from the disc to a directory or something (for client end)?

3. noticed the SPP project (uses maNGOS R2, not sure if it is a real maNGOS version or a port) and was wondering if it could be possible to modify it to work with older versions of the game?

4. is it possible to start world events in maNGOS? want to see the scourge invasion for myself and try the zombie plague since they blocked the corrupted blood trick in a patch prior to one needed for maNGOSZero?

5. could I use a trial installer from a PCPP disc to get the base game and then use the included updates to get myself to the required version?

6. (for those who have bought the retail starter set)what version of WoW is on each of the discs (it has discs for the original WoW, TBC, TWoTLK and Cata)?

NOTE: I do have some of the patches on my PCPP discs if that helps to get to the version I need to use say maNGOSZero on it's own (and possible maNGOS2)

any help is appreciated

Hi,

I will try and answer your questions to the best of my ability....

1) mangos Two (3.3.5a) - as about 60-70% complete, an actual list of what it / is not working is not complete - something we hope to address once we get a few more testers onboard. mangos Two is built on top on mangos zero and one so it contains all their content, plus the additional content for wotlk

2) Yes, but it's a painful process - as time goes by, the sources for the correct patches become rarer.

3) I have no idea what the SPP project is. MangosR2 are a splinter group of devs who went their own way several years ago, we do still try and include any decent updates in to the main cores.

4) yes, I can't remember the exact console command (someone here might remember it), but they can be triggered

5) no, blizzard recently changed their update system to now patch any clients up to mop level rather than incrementing them through the different expansions.

6) I'm not sure of what versions are on the base discs now are they often update them, but if you visit http://www.getmangos.eu/#cores the required game version is listed against each core.

Hope this helps

thanks very much, just a few points/comments about each question if it is ok.

1. thanks, might see about becoming a tester once I get everything set up

2. thanks for giving me a concrete answer, asked on AC Webs but they mostly just said no entirely.

3. SPP is a repack that adds AI bots among other things to make it a "blizzlike, Single Player experience"

4. thanks, does this work for one time events too?

5. sorry for not clarifying, by trial install I mean a very old (around the time WoW first came out I believe) client installer that had a trial code added, it did not launch the client instantly, just installed it like the discs.

6. thanks, really looking forward to checking out the disc versions, hopefully buying the starter set tomorrow (Australia time).

I have a few new questions based on the answers to the above ones if you do not mind, they are:

1. what would I need aside from the 3.3.5a files from the client and the server core/databases to get it to work? are the extraction tools included in the scripts?

2. by 60-70% do you mean of the entire thing or just the new content?

thanks again

The WotLK client from Molten-WoW wouldn't necessarily work, right? From previous experience with their Cataclysm client, the map/vmap extraction utilities aren't too keen on them. Then again, it might be possible to acquire a Repack of it that already has those extracted. Hm. Interesting to think about.

ok, will answer your points as best I can...

2) If you get stuck madmax can proberbly guide out since he's recently done it himself for all the cores

3) AI Bots are an available patch for the main cores, it would make sense to get the core working, then add the Bots

4) Yes

5) In fairness any base version is a start, more recent box sets come with a slightly higher patched client by default

and for you additional questions:

1) Included with the server code are the extraction tools, these are tested often to ensure they still work.

2) New content unique to wotlk, for older content - this is dependant on the progress of the earlier cores

Indeed, there are. And I did. :P Heheh. Wonderful. I'm surprised how possible that actually was, considering my patching problem from earlier. Localization; bah.

Not sure how anyone isn't having the same problems of Database patching though.

Sorry to hijack with a question. But I seen in your first response Antz

something we hope to address once we get a few more testers onboard

How would I go about becoming a tester? Whats is involved?

Feel free to Pm me if you like as I would really be interested in doing work/testing mangosTwo

any idea when/if 5.0 (the older content, do not care much for MoP itself) will be usable at all? unfortunately the discs have 5.0.0 as the base version even though they are meant to only go up to cataclysm.

The Last cata release we are supporting is 4.3.4. So much changes between versions that it takes a lot of time in effort to re-wire all the control systems back up per release.

The current MOP branch supports 5.4.2 Build 17688 (i think), while we are hoping to work on 5.4.7 shortly - Since blizz are saying that this will be the last patch before WOD next year.
