Leaving

It is with great sorrow and great frustration that I write this last post to the bulletin boards. Due to circumstances which are out of my control, I am being forced to leave the MaNGOS team.

Some one has latched onto my IP address and is making my life a living hell. I have been blocked from the MaNGOS forums three times now because of the DOS protection scheme. My modem has been reset remotely and I have lost my level 85 toon on LOTRO. These are just a few of the strange things that have started happening to me over the last few days.

I believe that I know who it is, and Antz has my theories.

I am sorry, but I am going to also have to shut down the beta farm as well. I am suppose to be getting the modem issues resolved some time within the next 6 hours. So, if anyone has anything that they would like to wrap up with me, I have 6 hours to do so.

I must leave because I have to much secure data at risk. Everything from a business website down to our game characters and e-mail accounts in between.

This individual is watching my ip for where I connect and when I connect to MaNGOS related materials, that is when he finally decides to strike.

Believe me, I have had more fun on here than I have in a long time and made many friends and do not want to leave you all, but I have no choice. :(

This is sad news and is a new low for the mangos 'scene'

Its bad enough when a user starts receiving criticising comments and emails when making changes to their own repo (forked from another project)

- If we went around doing that, we'd spend all day doing it

https://github.com/Project-Mangos/Servers/commit/559b3337b9c10bb4017928a65aafd10c43ccf354#commitcomment-3344295

But it becomes something a lot more sinister and serious when the same people start targeting a users home system and router.

- The events of this latest attack match the attack last month on the main mangos website/forum and repos.

My heartfelt thanks go out to you Wolverine and I have asked our security team to investigate and gather as much evidence as we can.

- The attack last month is regarded in law as a criminal act, so any additional information to help catch these sad individuals is greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry Wolverine. I was afraid of seeing something like this happening. This sucks. :(

I hope the attacks will stop now. These actions are disproportionately harsh. I still don't understand why someone would do this.

Just sit and wait til they lose their interest/grow up.

Hey,

Just to post I have already been in contact with wolverine and waiting for a reply from him.

Just wanted to post that if you are thinking something is in your computer or tracking you somehow I would run the following tools on it.

  • [li]
    Spybot Search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/mirrors
[/li]
[li]
Malwarebytes - Free Anti-Malware scanner/remover
http://www.malwarebytes.org
[/li]
[li]
Hitman Pro - Free cloud based scanner
http://www.surfright.nl/en/products[/li]

Finally I would get Comodo!

This is what I use at home and from tests performed on it they say its supposed to be the best.

Download Comodo here - http://www.comodo.com/products/free-products.php

For those wondering how there security products rated recently by Matousec.com check this out - http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php

I suspect Wolverine's ip was sniffed when he joined the cmangos irc server. I'd advise all MaNGOS users to avoid the cmangos irc servers in the future. Staying off their forums would be a good call as well.

It's not a nice situation, but just goes to show how desperate these people are to stop us !!

- these trolls are scouting through the github repos looking for people to scr*w with.

As madmax has posted elsewhere, get some security software installed and make sure you are as protected as possible.

- Don't use the same username and password everywhere.

And if you think you are being tracked, try some of the following:-

* When you go to bed, switch off your router - no one can access it then, no matter how good they are

* Find out how to release you ip address (and when), so that you get a new ip address on a regular basis

But to quote a good friend.... "You can't stop an idea,..... MaNGOS IS that idea"

- They can't stop all of us
